Domino’s Delivers Scholarships and Encouragement to High-Performing HBCU Students
In partnership with United Negro College Fund (UNCF), Domino’s awarded $50,000 worth of scholarships to 10 students at six Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs). The students are enrolled full-time at Clark Atlanta University, Howard University, Huston-Tillotson University, Morehouse College, Norfolk State University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and Saint Augustine’s University. Their areas of study include accounting, business administration and management, communication, computer information systems, and engineering.
The UNCF Domino’s scholarship program launched in 2020 with the intent to help students at HBCUs continue and complete their college degrees. Scholarship recipients must be a junior or senior at a UNCF member institution or HBCU, and demonstrate both financial need and academic excellence, and intentional career plans.
“Fintech is transforming the way we conduct business, manage personal finances, and ensure economic inclusion,” said Bella Spriggs, a Clark Atlanta University student studying business administration, finance and economics. “By developing and implementing innovative financial solutions, I aim to provide greater access to financial services, promote financial literacy, and create opportunities for economic empowerment. I am committed to using my education and expertise to uplift and support minority communities, helping to bridge the economic gap and foster a more inclusive financial landscape.”
The 101 HBCUs in the United States represent only 3% of all four-year nonprofit colleges and universities, but they enroll 10% of all African American students and 15% of all African Americans with bachelor’s degrees. HBCU’s cost of attendance is more than 25% less than attending a comparable non-HBCU.
According to UNCF, a disproportionate number of African American students face obstacles in going to and graduating from college. UNCF awards more than 12,000 scholarships annually. UNCF scholarship recipients have a 70% graduation rate – 11% higher than the national average and 31% higher than the national average for all African Americans.
“In an era where securing financial assistance remains a significant challenge for many students and their families, the number of students unable to pursue higher education continues to rise,” said Patrice Neal, area development director at UNCF Michigan. “For the fortunate scholars chosen to receive the UNCF Domino’s Pizza Scholarship, the burden of piecing together academic costs has been considerably lightened. This has allowed these gifted students to focus their energy on their academic pursuits. Moreover, being selected to receive a scholarship through a competitive program like this has not only boosted their self-confidence but also reinforced their determination to persevere until graduation.”
The UNCF Domino’s scholarship application for the spring 2025 semester will open at the end of 2024. Watch for updates on Domino’s LinkedIn.
