Delivery Driver Reports Gas Leak; Saves a Life

Published: March 19, 2025
Justin Butler has worked as a Domino’s delivery driver in Macomb, Illinois, since 2023.

On an ordinary day in Macomb, Illinois, Domino’s delivery driver Justin Butler was in the middle of a traditional route. With an order in hand, he approached a customer’s home, but what happened next would make this delivery far from ordinary.

As Justin stepped out of his car to deliver the pizza, he noticed something strange. An undeniable scent of gas wafted through the air, lingering heavily as he made his way up the sidewalk. His training as a delivery driver didn’t prepare him for moments like this, but due to his familiarity with the smell of gas, his instincts kicked in.

“As soon as the customer answered the door, I immediately let her know I smelled gas,” said Justin. "I told her that I was so concerned, I was going to call the fire department before returning to my route.”

Filled with gratitude, the customer later called the store and confirmed Justin’s suspicions. There was indeed a significant gas leak inside of the home—one that could have led to a disastrous explosion if left unchecked. Justin’s prompt actions likely saved this woman’s life.

For Justin, it wasn’t about the praise or the recognition; it was just another example of doing the right thing.

“I was just doing my job,” he said humbly. “I’ve always been told to trust my instincts, and I knew I had to act fast. I’m just glad I did.”

Justin’s quick action didn’t just prevent a gas leak from becoming a deadly disaster—it also highlighted the invaluable role delivery drivers can play in their communities. They are often seen as the people who simply drop off food and go on their way, but in this case, Justin became the unsung hero who did not hesitate when it counted most.

"I’ve always known that our team goes above and beyond, but what Justin did blew me away,” said Jeff Mabry, Macomb Domino’s franchisee. “He didn’t hesitate, he acted fast, called for help, and thanks to him a potentially life-threatening situation was avoided. Moments like these remind me how much the right people can make a difference."

It was a simple act of noticing the small but dangerous smell of gas, but for the customer, it meant everything. For Justin, it was just another reminder that sometimes, a routine delivery can become something bigger than anyone would expect.
