Domino’s Hosts Dr. Van B. Sapp for Juneteenth Speaker Series

Dr. Van Sapp, who has experience with companies like PepsiCo Inc. and Kraft Foods, as well as a transformative career in higher education, spoke to Domino’s team members in Ann Arbor, Michigan, for the brand’s Juneteenth Speaker Series on June 18, 2025.

On June 18, 2025, Domino’s proudly welcomed Dr. Van B. Sapp, Ph.D., MBA, as a distinguished guest for the Juneteenth Speaker Series, hosted by BLISS (Black Leaders Influencing, Strategizing and Succeeding), a Domino’s business resource group. With more than 35 years of leadership experience spanning Fortune 500 companies like PepsiCo Inc. and Kraft Foods, as well as a transformative career in higher education, Dr. Sapp brought authenticity, wisdom, and inspiration to a powerful conversation about freedom, leadership, and purpose.

As the current vice president of external affairs and strategic engagement at Tuskegee University, Dr. Sapp shared candid reflections on his journey—from navigating corporate culture as a young professional to becoming a mentor, educator, and advocate. Notably, he once supervised Domino’s CEO, Russell Weiner, which made his presence especially meaningful.

“Dr. Sapp has a unique connection to our leadership team,” said Kashmiere Apollon, BLISS chair. “In addition to his experience, his keen ability to uplift and empower the next generation of leaders felt perfectly aligned to the message of leadership, empowerment, and overcoming that we wanted to have for our Juneteenth conversation.”

Dr. Sapp’s message centered on the enduring significance of Juneteenth—not only as a historical milestone, but as a lens through which we understand dignity, opportunity and the power of being seen. His “snow day” metaphor deeply resonated with attendees: “Imagine driving all the way to work in a snowstorm only to find out it’s closed—because you didn’t get the message.” This served as a powerful parallel to the delayed freedom of enslaved people in Texas, and the broader need for timely access to information, resources, and justice.

Dr. Sapp challenged the audience to think deeply about what it means to lead with integrity. He emphasized that leadership is not about titles or authority, instead, it’s about service, influence and lifting others as you climb.

“Don’t underestimate the power of being seen, heard, and valued,” he shared. “And when you’re in a position to open doors, do so—intentionally and unapologetically.”
Dr. Sapp’s engaging style, thoughtful storytelling, and practical tools sparked reflection and dialogue among attendees.

“The session had an instant impact,” said Catherine Brown, BLISS interim chair. “He gave us examples that connected stories to real-life lessons and provided insight we can use to grow and help others grow, too.”

Dr. Sapp reminded the audience that freedom – past and present – must be honored through intentional action. For leaders and allies alike, his message was clear: acknowledge the past, celebrate the progress and remain committed to building a more inclusive future.
